Writing Sample: Mind-WARP Cutscene Dialogue

Fade in. Emelia is on her cell phone in her room. The room is untidy, but not exceedingly. There are remnants of her earlier childhood, stuffed animals, old books, family pictures on the mantle. In the corner is a white, wooden desk, covered in stickers. An old computer sits on top, the monitor casting an eerie light. She paces around the room.

Emelia:
They sent more. Seriously, these guys are whack jobs! I can't even tell if these messages are threats or what! (Long pause) No, they haven't said anything too serious. Just weird cryptic little things. (Pause) I don't know. I don't think I should go to the cops, what are they going to do? Besides, I'm not exactly an innocent party myself.

A message pops up on the computer. Emelia is too engrossed in her conversation to notice.

Emelia:
Stacy, come on! I played my part in it, and they know it. I am just...I'm getting scared. (Long pause) I know I can't! But what can I do? If I sit here doing nothing, they'll just keep emailing me, sending me messages. I'm up for that internship at MCLU, I don't want this to ruin that!

Another message pops up. This time, Emelia notices and turns to her computer, pulling out the chair and sitting down, and takes the phone in her other hand.

Emelia:
God da...they messaged me again. 'Emelia, you there?'...Should I respond? (Pause) Yea...you're right, what's the worst that could happen? I'll text you later.

Emelia hangs up the phone and looks at the screen.

Emelia:
(Speaking slowly as she types) 'Yea, I'm here. What do you want?' (pause and a ding as a message comes through) 'You know we want you back. You were too good for us to let you go'. I know that's crap...(speaking slowly again) 'I don't want to. I have a life again.'. (Pause and another message dings in) 'You know you can't get away.' Oh yea I can.

Emelia turns the monitor off, but continues the stare at the screen.

Emelia (V.O.)
My name is Emelia. For a while, I worked with a secret organization. They liked my abilities, so they kept me aboard. I don't know what they did to me. I don't even like the way I think anymore. But the saddest part is that no matter how many messages or emails I ignore, I constantly think about them...about how I should be there...working with them...It's a war in my head. But now...now I think it's time to start fighting back.
